We have enthusiastically introduced a new and fun character development program that we have taken through the whole school called ‘Bucket Filling’. Our School Council and staff promotes this throughout the week and collects all the bucket filling notes to give a child
'A Bucket Filler of the Week' Certificate
The children are enjoying this concept as it is very easy to understand. Everyone carries an invisible bucket that holds our good thoughts and feelings. It is the bucket full of happiness! The concept of being a bucket filler comes from Carol McCloud’s Book Have You Filled A Bucket Today? It stems around the idea that everyone carries around an invisible bucket that, throughout the day is being filled by the kind things that you do for others or that others do for you.
A bucket filler is someone who is showing positive character traits (kind, considerate, caring, respectful) and is being a responsible person. When our buckets are full, we feel happy and when our buckets are empty we feel sad.
Children quickly understand that they can fill buckets when they do and say things that are kind, considerate, caring, and respectful. They also learn that when they are unkind, inconsiderate, uncaring, or disrespectful, they dip into buckets and remove those good feelings. Even the youngest child understands that actions and words can either fill a bucket or dip into it. We also will try and learn the strategy of using our invisible lid to protect our bucket – strategies to deal with bucket dipping! This also promotes and support emotional and mental well-being.
We are encouraging, reminding, and recognising everyone’s efforts to be bucket fillers at home and at school to deepen our understanding of empathy and promote our British Values. With your help, I hope that we can create a positive, happy, bucket filling school and community!
This program enhances our Building Learning Power philosophy, Growth Mind-Set and ensures promotion of the life long skills of our LORIC words - Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication.
This is our bucket filler’s pledge.
